fruit for the gods

Music Player Instruction – play and find the light within
I was in Virginia surfing the net and in front of me appeared an ad – selling mangosteen powder, juice and capsules. I couldn’t believe that mangosteen was available for sale in these forms.
My mind went way back when in Bali. I was at the hotel and an Aussie guy, his partner and a friend asked me to join them on a day trip to see the various temples in Bali. I was excited as I wanted to see and experience the meditative practices at the Balinese temples.
We set off early – with a driver. The scenery was magnificent – rice paddies on both sides – glistening in the morning sun. Suddenly, my new Aussie buddy asked me if I’ve ever had mangosteen. No idea what he meant.
He asked the driver to stop and there on the side of the road were simple stalls selling a fruit that I’ve never seen. He bought a bag of these purple coloured fruit and as he opened one, he told me “you must taste this fruit. It’s the queen of all fruits”. I looked at him in a strange way but decided to try this new fruit.
Well, I truly have never had such an exotic looking fruit and its taste was the sweetest fruit I’ve ever had. I was mesmerized by its taste and inner beauty.
Yes, we got to the temples and saw the women, dressed in their colourful sarongs walking to the gate. On their heads a simple woven banana leaved basket with mangosteen offerings – the fruit for the gods.
We sat on the ground watching their rituals. A beautiful tribute to their gods.
It was time to leave and we did. We were silent – reflecting on the unique yet universal spiritual expression of the Balinese.
